Leo Díaz (b. 1977, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) is a distinguished Caribbean visual artist, muralist, and educator whose work serves as a bridge between classical tradition and contemporary abstraction. Based in the mountains of Sosúa, Díaz has spent over two decades developing a visual language where “Art is the universal language and color is its alphabet.”

Artistic Evolution & Education

Beginning his journey at the age of fifteen, Díaz’s early years were defined by a self-taught passion that later evolved into rigorous academic training. He studied at the prestigious Bellas Artes art schools in Puerto Plata and Santiago, as well as in Santo Domingo. This dual foundation allowed him to master technical draftsmanship before pushing the boundaries into his signature abstract style.

His work is deeply influenced by a lineage of masters—from the Renaissance precision of Michelangelo and Tintoretto to the emotive light of Rembrandt and Van Gogh. In his contemporary practice, one can see the structural echoes of Pablo Picasso and the atmospheric depth of Mark Rothko, all filtered through a vibrant Caribbean lens.

The “COSMOS” Series & Global Reach

Díaz is perhaps best known for his COSMOS series and Trayecto Marciano works, which explore the intersection of the earthly and the extraterrestrial. His mastery of mixed media and collage on large-format canvases has earned him a place in significant private and public collections worldwide.

Beyond the studio, his impact as a muralist is visible across the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, including high-profile renovations for luxury brands like Veuve Clicquot and Louis Vuitton at The Ocean Club.

Academic Contribution & Recognition

A dedicated advocate for art education, Díaz currently serves as an art professor at Casa de Arte de Sosúa. His commitment to the cultural development of the region has been formally recognized by the Municipal Council of Sosúa and international institutions in Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. His work has been featured on the covers of literary works and in global publications such as National Geographic Traveler and Moon Dominican Republic.

Leo Díaz, Puerto Plata, República Dominicana, 1977. Artista visual, dibujante, fotógrafo, muralista, diseñador y profesor de artes visuales, se inició en la pintura a los quince años. De formación autodidacta en sus primeros años, posteriormente recibiría formación académica tanto en la escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerto Plata, su ciudad natal, como en la de Santiago – Santo Domingo.
Sus influencias en pintura son variadas. Le vienen desde el Renacimiento con Miguel Ángel y Tintoretto y más modernamente con los holandeses Rembrandt y Van Gogh hasta desembocar en el siglo XX con los pintores Pablo Picasso y el ruso, emigrado a los Estados Unidos, Mark Rothko.
Díaz actualmente vive y trabaja en Sosúa, donde es profesor de arte en Casa de Arte de Sosúa, República Dominicana. Entre sus exhibiciones más importantes en la República Dominicana se cuentan:
